My Fortress, My Stronghold, My Deliverer

My Lord is ...

In the Bible the Lord is referred to as a tower, fortress and stronghold more than once. This is a metaphor i.e a way to describe something using an image that helps you understand the meaning

So what does it mean that God is these things?

Imagine an old fashioned castle, with towers and turrets and huge thick walls. They were the place that people ran to for safety, the place they sheltered from an approaching army. It felt like they could never be destroyed.
So this is how someone is trying to describe God.

If the Lord is my Stronghold He can keep me safe from all the arrows and swords of the world.
Maybe, the mean words that people throw at us.
Or the stress and strain of the strange times we are living in.
Perhaps, an event coming up that worries you.

The Lord is there to give you shelter and rest when you need it. You just need to ask to be let in.

Build it up

Maybe to help you imagine what this means you could build your own fortress. We have made some at church before, with chairs and sheets or with wooden bricks.

Light Of The World

Light Of The World You are maybe familiar with Jesus being called Light of the World, particularly at this time of year as we approach Halloween and Christmas. He brings hope and love from God to the people of the world and shows them the way back to a relationship with the Father. But here it is Jesus teaching the disciples and people that they are light to the world as well. If you have something special and important you want to show people, not hide it away. We have a hope that God cares about the world and about each of us and we should be ready to share that hope. No Hiding It should be obvious in your every day life that you are a follower of Jesus. If you are a Christian and no-one knows then you aren't sharing the gospel and good news. That sharing doesn't always involve words but can be shown in your actions and attitudes. You should stand out from the crowd by the love and care you exhibit. Maybe you choose to walk away and not join in the gossip, or you stand alongs...

Hope to hang on to

What is hope? The dictionaries say that Hope is a feeling and expectation that a particular thing is going to happen. Sometimes hope is assured and sometimes unlikely.  Maybe, you hope your favourite team will win a match. That can be likely to happen or you could be rather optimistic!  An older definition includes the idea of trust as well. So what is the hope that we have as Christians? Firstly, that if God has promised it, it will happen. We see God's promises in the bible in stories like Noah, Abraham and Joseph. Their lives included promises for the future, some of which we see come true in their lives and the lives of their families.                                                     🚢                 ✰                🌈 But our biggest Hope is rooted in Jes...

What's in a name?

Colouring Sheet Why does Jesus have lots of names? The colouring sheet shows just a few of the names Jesus is known as. There are lots of names in the bible that are given to God or Jesus. Why? What is wrong with just having one name? Well, think about yourself. You might think you only have one name but actually you will have more than you realise.  Are you a son or daughter?  Or a husband or wife or partner?  Maybe you use a slightly different name at work than you do at home? Do your friends have a nickname for you?  These names tell us something about you and Jesus and God's names tell us about them. How do we use these names? Some of the bible names are only used once or twice, some are used repeatedly. The story you find them in will help explain why the name was used and that can help us realise when we should use them. An example would be to use Bread of Life during communion as this helps us to think about the name and the service. I find it helpful to think...
