Studying the Word

What is the Bible? The bible is not a single book but is, actually, a collection of books written around 2000 to 3000 years ago. These books include history and stories, laws, guidance and good advice, poetry and songs. They teach us about God, what He is like and our relationship with Him. The Bible starts with an idea of how the universe began and ends with an idea of what the future may hold. In between that is the story of God and His chosen people. These people make mistakes and have huge triumphs, good days and bad days, just like we do as well. Reading the Bible Have you read much of the bible? Maybe you know a few of the stories and recognise some of the verses that are used at weddings and funerals. Reading the Bible isn't always easy and it isn't really made to be read from cover to cover, though you can if you want. Some of the stories are written more than once to get more than one viewpoint.  So, how should you read the Bible? Try and find a way that suits you. May...

Through water and fire, He is with us.

Colouring Page Isaiah 43:2 "When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze." In Times of Trouble I don't know how you have been feeling through this whole pandemic but I have definitely felt in times of trouble. I feel safe at home, where I can control what is going on, but I often feel stressed and worried when I have to go out. Shopping has become tense instead of routine or even enjoyable. Meeting friends takes planning and preparation rather than an impulsive trip to a coffee shop. God's Promise In difficult times the bible reminds us that God is there when we need him. He will not let our situations overcome us.  Imagine a stormy sea as a picture of life. The waves will not pull you from the boat, Jesus is there to calm the storm or to give you a way to cope with it. It has been said that though ev...

Love is ...

Colouring Page God's Love God's love for us is all of the things listed in the chapter from 1 Corinthians that I have used for the colouring page this week. This is an amazing list and teaches us how we should try to love too. Are you always patient and kind with those you love? Do you make sure you keep no record of wrongs? This is a real challenge for us and we cannot do it alone. Help along the way God has offered us help to get through our lives. He showed this love through Jesus, His Son, and He sent the Holy Spirit to guide and fill us each day. This is how we love properly. Not in our own power but in God's. Symbols of love Hearts One very familiar symbol of love is the heart 💖 and there are loads of fun ways to create them. We drew hearts and the word LOVE with white candles on white card. Then someone else painted over the images. They appear because the wax doesn't absorb the paint. Have you ever made a row of paper people? You can do this with hearts too. Co...

My Fortress, My Stronghold, My Deliverer

My Lord is ... In the Bible the Lord is referred to as a tower, fortress and stronghold more than once. This is a metaphor i.e a way to describe something using an image that helps you understand the meaning Colouring Page So what does it mean that God is these things? Imagine an old fashioned castle, with towers and turrets and huge thick walls. They were the place that people ran to for safety, the place they sheltered from an approaching army. It felt like they could never be destroyed. So this is how someone is trying to describe God. If the Lord is my Stronghold He can keep me safe from all the arrows and swords of the world. Maybe, the mean words that people throw at us. Or the stress and strain of the strange times we are living in. Perhaps, an event coming up that worries you. The Lord is there to give you shelter and rest when you need it. You just need to ask to be let in. Build it up     Maybe to help you imagine what this means you could build your own fortress. We...

Creative Creator

Creator God is amazing, with an amazing imagination. I love reading and I love it when an author creates a whole world, like Middle Earth or Narnia. The imagination it must take is incredible. So what does it take to imagine a whole universe and then, not just write about it, but actually make it exist. WOW! Created If God is the creator, we are the created, made by Him. And He knows us inside out because we are special to Him. Have you made anything special? A picture or painting, maybe a pot made of clay or something with Lego. You want to keep your special thing safe and make sure it doesn't get broken. God wants us to be safe and doesn't want us hurt or broken. Creative We have a gift from God and that is creativity. We are made to make things. I find that wonderful and I love to express my creative side. I like to hand sew decorations and accessories. What is your favourite way to create?  I have listed quite a few in the chart but I know that you'll have loads more cr...

What's in a name?

Colouring Sheet Why does Jesus have lots of names? The colouring sheet shows just a few of the names Jesus is known as. There are lots of names in the bible that are given to God or Jesus. Why? What is wrong with just having one name? Well, think about yourself. You might think you only have one name but actually you will have more than you realise.  Are you a son or daughter?  Or a husband or wife or partner?  Maybe you use a slightly different name at work than you do at home? Do your friends have a nickname for you?  These names tell us something about you and Jesus and God's names tell us about them. How do we use these names? Some of the bible names are only used once or twice, some are used repeatedly. The story you find them in will help explain why the name was used and that can help us realise when we should use them. An example would be to use Bread of Life during communion as this helps us to think about the name and the service. I find it helpful to think...

Praise today

What is Praise? The Oxford dictionary tell us that praise is expressing approval for someone or something or showing respect and gratitude, particularly towards God. Other words that can mean the same (synonyms) are worship, glory, exalt, honour. We tell children 'well done' when we are pleased with them.  We praise God because of who He is and what He has done.  How do we praise? We use songs and hymns in church to help us praise. Whilst we aren't at church there are loads of resources online, particularly YouTube. 🎜🎜🎝🎜🎜 These songs are good to remind us of all the amazing things God has done and who He is. King of Kings, Faithful One, Almighty, Saviour, and so many other names. Many people find this the easiest way to express these ideas.  But we don't have to sing to praise! Maybe you are artistic and creative. The Garden of Eden Rainbow in the garden The first picture was made at church in our Sunday school, Sunday Jam, and is a picture of the Garden of Ed...
